A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Connection analysis is founded on a number of general principles and laws which must be satisfied. The violation of these rules and laws may imply unsound connection design. These are: equilibrium, action and reaction principle and the static theorem of limit analysis of the theory of plasticity, and are discussed in depth. However, other physical phenomena may interact with plasticity and are not under the shelter of static theorem: buckling, fatigue, slip and fracture. The interaction of plasticity and buckling is discussed and the so called general method of Eurocode 3 introduced, as well as non linear analyses. In order to assure that no failure mode related to buckling, fracture or fatigue is met, special care must be taken. Connections are classified as hypo‐, hyper‐ or iso‐connected. The concept of force packet is introduced.
