Structural Skins
This chapter discusses how new fabrication techniques have made it possible to conceive buildings where the envelope and structure coincide, much like the airframes of modern aircraft. In new techniques, the typical prefabricated products of the building industry, such as rolled‐steel sections, are replaced by simple flat metal sheets, which are then cut, worked, shaped and connected to suit. When compared with other structural products, metals are also good candidates for external enclosure as they are inherently waterproof. When provided with stiffeners, the continuous metal envelope also acquires the capacity to function as a primary structure. The chapter refers to the architectural design of the Arts University Bournemouth studio designed by Cook Robotham Architectural Bureau (CRAB), which was founded in 2006 by Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham. A set of openings of different sizes, positions and orientations would create different light conditions within to suit various drawing environment. The computer animation industry has developed algorithms that can generate realistic organic shapes starting from only a few control points of a basic mesh.
