Determination of the In‐situ Geotechnical Parameters of Soils
In this chapter, the authors look at the tests that make it possible to determine the parameters on site, as well as actual applications of soil identification and classification parameters with respect to working platforms. The construction of a bridge or the digging of a tunnel is totally different from the building of a house or the raising of a small embankment to establish a road. Identification and classification tests are very important and instructive for all geotechnical projects. The field vane test was invented in Sweden at the beginning of the last century. The “remolded” tests can also be the result of poorly executed or poorly calibrated borings, in other words, borings with a “large” diameter or borings drilled in a hurry without any precautions. The pressuremeter test is the most substantial test of all of the geotechnical tests in situ intended for the designing and justification of foundations of geotechnical works.
