Conservation Legislation in the UK
A brief look at the evolution of planning and conservation legislation in England from the late nineteenth century to the present day, it examines the roles of those who sought to influence how land use and protection of the countryside could be achieved and the effectiveness of their efforts. Key elements of the legislation are identified.
The chapter also examines a number of significant events that brought about national debates on the desirability of state intervention in the use of land and the protection of historic monuments and buildings. The introduction, in 1947, of the first effective and comprehensive planning legislation sets the scene for an increasingly complex legislative framework which continues to develop to the present day.
The links between controls for the protection of the built and natural historic environment and how these became more numerous and increasingly detailed throughout the twentieth century are outlined as are the activities of social reformers, legislators, activists and the emerging profession of Town and Country Planning.
