Models and Definitions: Changing the Paradigm
This chapter attempts to provide further discussion on the definition of urban planning. The mobility model that we witness today in developed countries and particularly in France, largely dominated by the massive use of cars for daily travel, was established after World War II. While the urbanization sprawl was driven by the development of car use and, more generally, by an increase in the performance of the transport system, it would be simplistic to consider it to be the only cause. The lack of land market regulation in a context of growing urban sprawl aggravated socio‐spatial disparities. Lewis Mumford addresses town planning from the history of technology, whereof he was an eminent specialist. Analyzing the roots of the industrial way of life, he developed a critical analysis from a resolutely humanistic point of view.
