An activity schedule is a list of activities which is used to value the work completed by the contractor at various stages through the progress of the Works. The Works are divided into different activities and a price allocated to each one. In this respect the activity schedule has much in common with a standard bar (Gantt) chart plus costs. It is argued that inviting tenders on the basis of activity schedules rather than quantities enables easier comparison of the tenders received. Good activity schedules must contain an adequately detailed description of activities and apportionment of prices, particularly in the subdivision of schedules which exceed one month, otherwise proper valuation will be difficult. These schedules are very attractive in theory, but for the reasons outline above considerable reflection is needed before deciding to proceed on the basis of an activity schedule.
