Rational Design of Shallow Foundations
This chapter deals with the conventional design and rational design of shallow foundations using the beams on elastic foundations approach. Stresses, settlements and contact pressure are discussed, and the effects of vertical and inclined loads are explained. Foundation design in practical and difficult site conditions is also outlined. In addition, there is a rational analysis of soil structure interaction using the beams on elastic foundations approach. Several soil models, including the most commonly used Winkler's model, are presented, while beams and plates on elastic foundations are discussed. Evaluation of the modulus of subgrade reaction, ks (also referred to as the coefficient of elastic uniform compression, Cu), modulus of elasticity, E and Poisson's ratio, v, using plate load test and cyclic plate load tests is explained. The soil structure interaction equations are also clearly presented in this chapter.
