Rainwater Harvesting: The Indian Experience – Traditional and Contemporary
This chapter focuses on traditional and contemporary rain water harvesting (RWH). In addition, the traditional groundwater sources and a few traditional water management practices are also discussed. Indians over the centuries developed techniques to manage every possible form of water: rainwater, melting ice, river water, groundwater, streams, and floodwater. Indians knew that food security could be ensured by harvesting grains, and water security by harvesting rain. There is archeological evidence to show that Indians had harvested rain as early as 3000 BCE. Since then, people living in different parts of India have harvested rain in different ways. The chapter discusses the present status of the traditional RWH systems. In addition, it discusses what happened in the last 30 years to promote and popularize RWH in urban areas of Tamil Nadu.
