Assessment of Ageing and Life Extension
The purpose of the assessment of an existing structure is to ensure that the structure is acceptable for further use, particularly for life extension, taking into account changes that have occurred and other factors that may undermine confidence in its integrity. ISO19902 states that it is the owners' responsibility to maintain and demonstrate fitness for purpose of a platform for the given site and operating conditions. The ISO 19902 procedure includes both a check of the ultimate limit state (ULS) and the fatigue limit state. ISO13822 lists land based structures in the scope of the standard and is not used for offshore structures. The crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) is the fracture toughness parameter used for offshore structures. The prediction of strength and fatigue crack growth requires the use of data which are often subject to considerable uncertainty. Structural reliability analysis (SRA) is used to analyse limit state failure and associated probabilities of load‐strength systems.
