A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter describes that strength grading refers to a very specific ‘end use’ of timber for one purpose only: that of supporting a load in a structure. It explains what is meant by a strength grade, as opposed to a strength class; and argues that structural timber may be graded either visually or by a machine – at least insofar as the softwoods are concerned. The chapter also explains how temperate and tropical hardwoods are different, both in respect of the strength grades given for them and in the way in which those grades are combined with the wood species to achieve a particular strength class. BS 4978 specifies the grading rules for producing two distinct strength grades called ‘general structural’ and ‘special structural’, known universally as GS and SS. The chapter presents a quick comment about something called ‘Canadian lumber standards’ in respect of structural softwood timber; and explains what those initials mean.
