A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Corporate Hub, Office Market and Real Estate
Since the 1986 ‘Big Bang,’ London's development industry and local planning authorities have successfully deployed new tools to generate high‐quality space capacity and prudently manage cycles of demand. This chapter details the successive makeovers of the skyline in the City of London and Canary Wharf, as well as the diffusion of London's office geography into vibrant new inner‐city districts. It also gauges the transformative impact of foreign capital on the city's commercial property performance and all‐round resilience. An ever more sophisticated grasp of supply and demand needs means that London has become more flexible and responsive to the emergence of new sectors since the financial crisis.
