A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Emerging Technologies
This chapter details some emerging technologies that may, perhaps, be common place in the not too distant future. Varying the flow rate in a ‘dumb’ ventilation system might be limited to time control, i.e. either on or off. ‘Smart’ or demand controlled ventilation systems vary the flow rate according to any prevailing set of circumstances. Multi‐pane arrangements, inert gas filled cavities, and selective reflective coatings/layers are now commonplace, but twenty‐first century glazing is moving towards having a more active role as window technologies become ‘smart’. Smart windows aim to actively control the chromogenic properties of a building’s glazing removing the need for blinds/shades and helping with cooling resulting from solar heat gain. A smart lighting system seeks to support the circadian rhythm and provides the optimum light intensity and colour, over the day, through the use of daylighting in combination with a Wi‐Fi controlled, tuneable LED lighting design.
