A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In this chapter, the author shares the discussion he had in an interview with Nader Tehrani. In addition to his leadership role as Dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, Nader Tehrani is Founder and Principal Designer of NADAAA, a practice dedicated to interdisciplinary collaboration between urbanism, architecture, and construction. Nader's leadership voice is unique, in part, because of his dual roles in practice and academia. While many university design programs remain housed in single discipline siloes, his leadership at The Cooper Union – as well as NADAAA – purposefully integrate art, architecture, and the act of making. In his interview, Nader thoughtfully articulates how practice and academia should appropriately inform – but not unnecessarily constrain – the other. He shares examples of the fusion between design and making in NADAAA's practice as well as The Cooper Union's curricula.
