NDE Methods for Monitoring Corrosion and Corrosion‐assisted Cracking

Depending upon the nature of the component, type and location of corrosion, and access to the location, nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods such as visual, liquid penetrant, magnetic flux leakage (MFL), eddy current, infrared thermography (IRT), radiography, and ultrasonic methods are used for detection of corrosion. This chapter provides the applications of eight of the most commonly employed important NDE methods for detection and evaluation of uniform corrosion, localized pitting corrosion, erosion, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and microbiologically induced corrosion. It places emphasis on a few novel and recent applications of NDE techniques for detection of SCC and pitting corrosion, with the help of case studies to bring out the recent advances in NDE methods for corrosion monitoring. NDE techniques for corrosion monitoring of pipes, aircraft structures, and concrete structures are covered. Recent trends in NDE for corrosion monitoring include multisensor fusion, embedded sensors, and wireless sensor networks.
