Materials of the Urban Fabric
The most important point for urban planning and development of cities is certainly the fact that this space and time of materials allows us to distinguish urban fabrics according to regions and periods. This chapter distinguishes between so‐called traditional materials and materials resulting from technical innovations. It considers five of these materials, with which we can characterize almost all of the world's cities until the Industrial Revolution, and some of which contribute to the charm of the urban planning of historic city centers in many European cities: wood, from which cob is derived, raw earth, used as is or baked to form bricks, and finally, ashlar. The brick prefigures materials resulting from technical innovations, which, by definition, are manufactured according to processes that are sometimes complex, before having to be moved from their place of production to sites of construction.
