Ancient Musical Performance in Context: Places, Settings, and Occasions
In reconstructing aspects of ancient music, we must always strive to interpret philological and iconographical evidence within their archaeological context. It is impossible to study spaces of musical performances in Greek and Roman Antiquity without taking into account the practicalities of performances and the possible acoustic properties of the spaces that were used. When studying places hosting musical events in Antiquity, it is necessary to make a distinction between occasional spaces (without any particular equipment) and architectural spaces (specifically designed for this purpose). This chapter presents first a topographical survey of occasional spaces like private houses, streets and sacred places. Second, the construction of specific buildings, theaters and ōideia, is considered. The third part is dedicated to a case study, the sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi.
