The engagement context for a problem structuring method (PSM) is always unique; this naturally suggests that some flexibility in approach is required to deal with specific circumstances. In terms of practical considerations, this chapter focuses on four key aspects (i) establishing a trust relationship with the client, (ii) dealing with the value paradox, (iii) identifying relevant stakeholders and dealing with multi‐organisational contexts, and (iv) being ready to facilitate a group workshop. Developing a trust relationship between a client and their consultant, navigating the value paradox, identifying and engaging stakeholders, being proficient in the facilitated delivery of problem structuring workshops and practicing ethically constitute a processual view of Soft Operational Research practice. On becoming an expert in the use of PSMs, Keys recognised that the idea that a successful problem structuring engagement would be reflected in a more favourable configuration of the actor‐network.
