Disaster Risk Reduction
Disaster risk reduction (DRR) includes disciplines like disaster management, hazard mitigation and emergency preparedness, but DRR is also considered an integral part of sustainable development. Current efforts in DRR are based on the Sendai Framework for Action in Disaster Risk Reduction that was agreed in 2015. It may be helpful to think of a disaster resilient or disaster‐resistant community as the safest possible community that can be created in a natural hazard context, minimising its vulnerability by maximising the application of DRR measures. Building codes provide a good basis for incorporation of the DRR measures. The Eurocodes provide structural design guidance for engineers in the design of the built environment. Related to disaster risk management, “Eurocode 8 ‐ Design of Structures for Earthquake Resistance” has particular significance. The objectives of Eurocode 8 in implementing earthquake resistance within structures is to protect human lives, limit damage, and to ensure important structures for civil protection remain operational.
