Swales, Filter Strips, and Level Spreaders
Swales and filter strips are vegetated stormwater control measures (SCMs) employed for conveyance and treatment of stormwater. The filter strip can play a very important role in reducing the stormwater volume from the pavement source as a significant fraction of the runoff is infiltrated during sheet flow over the filter strip. Swales and filter strips offer few opportunities for water quality improvement. Research findings are nearly uniform: swales and filter strips improve water quality for sediment and sediment‐borne pollutants. Vegetated swale design and performance can be separated into two general parts: hydraulic and pollutant capture. A major reason for the popularity of swales and filter strips is the ease of construction. Filter strips are flat, with a slight slope. Swales are (usually) trapezoidal channels. Both are easily constructed with standard construction equipment. However, level spreaders require specific consideration to ensure that they are perfectly level.
