Analyzing and Reporting Variances in Schedule and Cost
This chapter explores the presentation of the analyses, how they are interpreted, potential causes of the variances, and lastly, how to identify their root causes. One tool for analyzing and comparing data is the Earned Value S‐curve (EVS). The EVS allows the team to compare planned versus actual schedule and cost data and derive efficiency factors from the data. Efficiency factors can signal a problem that may require further analysis to determine the cause. While there are many causes of variances, there are some common threads to both cost and schedule variance. The Tracking Gantt chart can compare actual start/finish dates and durations of individual tasks and their impact on the critical path. Other types of graphic depictions such as control, SPI, and CPI charts indicate a bigger picture tracked over time.
