Ritual and Splendor
Chosŏn Court Art
This chapter explores court art and crafts through the examination of painting and other media. The art and crafts strongly reflect the ideological and political circumstances of the Choson court, and the iconography of court art was strictly governed by court ritual. Kyongbok Palace in Soul (Seoul) was the first royal complex to be built as government seat and royal residence of the new Choson dynasty. In the early Choson dynasty, the Royal Bureau of Painting was established based on a previous Koryo institution and supervised by the Board of Rites. Portraits of the king naturally had the highest priority but court painters were also asked to produce documentary paintings to commemorate other court celebrations. The depiction of the landscape and the animals was ornamental such as the clouds taking on diamond shapes. While the women's quarters of Choson homes were adorned with paintings of birds and flowers, the male quarters' paintings had books.
