Meeting Demand
Water Strategy, Policy and Legislation
This chapter begins by reviewing the current legislative and regulatory framework for managing water quality and demand in the built environment. Strategies to foster greater water use efficiency in the future are examined and current policy directions for water management in England and Wales are outlined. Future sustainable water management in the built environment will require an imaginative mixture of regulation, financial incentives, technology and societal contributions. Measuring the worth of water as a financially valuable commodity through ecosystem services or setting tariffs on potable water would undoubtedly result in changes to consumer and producer attitudes. It may control demand and protect water quantity.
