Lean Design and Efficiency
By emphasizing flexibility, adaptability, and continuous improvement, Lean is an especially appropriate and useful methodology for healthcare organizations to use during the period of dynamic and far‐from‐fully‐predictable change. One of the major ways that Lean principles dovetail with those of sustainable green design programs is by eliminating excess square footage during the predesign phase of a building project. To understand why architects and other professionals began applying Lean to the design of healthcare facilities, this chapter reviews a series of innovations that led to the creation and use of Lean by manufacturers. The way that Lean defines the key concepts such as value, standardization, takt time, cycle time, and waste shapes how Lean principles are applied to the design of healthcare facilities. The chapter also describes the composition of project teams that use Lean to improve the operations and design of healthcare facilities.
