Fire Department Extinguishment
Time is more important to the evaluation of manual extinguishment than to any other component except perhaps life safety by egress. Thus, estimating time durations for a set of relatively independent, although related, events becomes vital to understanding fire performance. The Interactive Performance Information (IPI) chart is an important tool for comparing fire conditions and fire suppression events. The diagnostic fire, the building design, detection and fire department notification are under the management control of the owner and occupant. Fire department response from notification to first‐in arrival is under the management control of the community. A building performance analysis has the advantage of knowing the diagnostic fire location and conditions at the time of fire department arrival. Arrival to extinguishment has three phases to an evaluation. The time from control to extinguishment may be relatively short or very extended, depending on the composite fire size and conditions, building design, and fire department resources.
