Meter Reading Problems
Difficulties in recruiting meter readers because of a tight local labor market, and competition with expanding industries paying high wages, prompted the Monroe County Water Authority to attempt to improve the efficiency of its meter‐reading operation. The Authority recently experimented with the use of radio readout to reduce water‐meter‐reading costs. It also tried equipping its meter readers with motor scooters and considered outside meter settings. Remote readout has also been studied. These attempts to solve a problem that many water utilities experience are the subject of this article. Details of the Authority's operations are given as general background information, and current practices are described to reflect both past efforts at solving the meter‐reading problem and the experiences that led to the investigation of new methods.
