Becoming your own client is an obvious way of achieving autonomy and proving your full potential as an architect. Of course, that requires an understanding of finances and the property market, and an ability to calculate risk. All these are fundamental to Carl Turner's practice. In conversation with Guest‐ Editors Chris Bryant, Caspar Rodgers and Tristan Wigfall of alma‐nac, he describes how his first self‐initiated project, for a prototype super‐low‐energy terraced house in South London, fed into another for a temporary community centre, and ultimately led to a major institutional commission.
