Nematode Removal by Rapid Sand Filtration
The purpose of this study was to obtain the correlation between concentrations of nematodes in filter influent and effluent while using different sizes of filter media at different loading rates. A pilot plant, designed to pretreat 400,000 gpd was used for this study. The raw water was taken from a channel which feeds a part of the Delhi (India) water works. The following conclusions were drawn from these studies on removal of nematodes by filtration: removal of nematodes by rapid sand filtration is independent of the effective size of the filter media between 0.45 and 0.75 mm; variation in the loading rate between 7.4 and 9.8 em/min has very little effect on the efficiency of filters in removing nematodes; about 55‐60 per cent of the mobile nematodes will pass through the filters operated as conventional rapid sand filters; and, nematodes in soil can be activated for such experiments.
