A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Urban Water and Sediment Quality
This chapter outlines sources, transport and behaviour of pollutants mobilised by urban runoff, and impacts of urban runoff on receiving water quality and sediment quality. It also discusses mitigation of urban runoff using sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS), and the quality of sediments in SUDS. The continued and rapid growth of urban areas across Europe places increasing importance on the control of urban stormwater runoff. Comprehensive stormwater management plans in both new and existing urban areas should not only address stormwater quantity and quality but also need to consider sustainable development requirements. As noted earlier, the majority of the urban pollutant load is reported to be transported by sediments. The quality of sediments in SuD systems can and does vary in relation to a range of factors including SuDS type, design, age and operation and maintenance regime. A further important influencing parameter is the type of land‐use activities taking place in the surrounding catchment.
