Water Resources of the Delaware River Estuary
The estuary of the Delaware River is formed by the tidal portion of the Delaware River, the Delaware Bay, and their tributaries. It extends from Trenton, New Jersey in the north, to Cape May, New Jersey and Henlopen, Delaware in the south, a distance of about 130 miles. The upper reach of the tidal river, from Trenton to a location that varies from Philadelphia to Marcus Hook is, in effect, a natural impoundment of fresh water dammed up by the salt water of the lower estuary. The downstream limit of water in which sea salts are undetectable varies with the tide, wind, freshwater inflow, and other factors. The Delaware is vital to the development of the country's most heavily populated area, yet it is not a large river. The article discusses tidal characteristics in addition to the estuary characteristics already mentioned, along with salinity issues and planning considerations.
