Alternative Monitoring Guidelines Released
On August 6, 1997, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) issued guidelines for alternative monitoring, formerly known as permanent monitoring relief. This article describes these guidelines, including: sampling waivers allowed for chronic contaminants; surrogate sampling points; reduced nitrate sampling; and, state adoption and USEPA approval of alternative monitoring. The article also provides a list of chronic chemical contaminants for which USEPA's alternative monitoring guidelines apply.
