Cité
This chapter presents the history and development process of cité. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of cité. The chapter is also an ideal resource for urban planners, housing developers, builders, and housing trust professionals. The history of Santiago Poniente (West Santiago) is directly linked to the founding of the city by Pedro de Valdivia in 1541. Covering an extensive area of over 370 hectares, Santiago Poniente did not become a socially homogeneous or monofunctional district. Unlike the casa chorizo, but similar to Quito's patio house, the cités represent a relatively loose definition of a typology, based on conceptual, historic and social similarities more than on strictly architectural ones. The cités are also interesting in that the evolution of the architecture started with very modest schemes that were only later adapted to higher social classes.
