Temporariness in Architectural Regeneration
Rapid cycles of change and increasing levels of uncertainty are reflected in growing practices of fluidity and temporality in the regeneration environment. Often initiated by grass roots movements and/or young entrepreneurs, temporary interventions or pop‐ups involve the temporary use of a redundant space for a commercial, semi‐commercial, or community function. Temporary interventions contribute to the regeneration of buildings by prolonging their use and drawing attention to their values, character, and potential for future development. The interim or meanwhile use for an existing building plays a role in the architectural regeneration process and the continued use, occupation, and re‐purposing of an existing building, and can pave the way to longer‐term revitalisation and unlocking the potential of buildings and sites. Popularity attained through a temporary use can also rapidly displace the original instigators and lead to processes of gentrification.
