The Creature from the Id
Adventures in Aboriginal Art Curating
This chapter charts the history of Aboriginal art and curating in six phases, from the arrival in 1788 of the British in Australia to the present situation, in which Aboriginal curators develop exhibitions for and about the work of Aboriginal artists. It attempts to contextualize and consider the impact of colonization, racism, and dispossession on each phase and concludes with three curated exhibition case studies. Each case study demonstrates how Aboriginal curators must work against the current trend to depoliticize the reading of Aboriginal art and re‐establish their key cultural power position in contemporary Australian society.
