Statuary and Relief
This chapter reviews the major extant sculptural monuments in rock relief, architectural relief, and freestanding sculpture produced for the Achaemenid court and recovered at the Iranian sites of Pasargadae, Bisitun, Naqsh‐i Rustam, Persepolis, and Susa. We consider this art as the template for a coherent imperial program meant to be transferable with local modifications to diverse regions of the empire. Following brief explanations of scope and approach, we examine selected sculptural monuments with multiple issues in mind, as relevant to each case: production and labor, sculptural technique, chronology, and style; esthetic dynamics, iconography, and strategies for understanding meanings – both intended and received; after‐lives of some sculptures; and important opportunities for new projects.
