Evaluating Seismic Stability of Embankment Dams
This chapter analyzes the seismic behavior of dams through an initial appraisal of observed accidents and assessed failures before launching any modeling. Embankment dams are more vulnerable to earthquakes than concrete dams. The chapter first discusses observed seismic performance of embankment dams. Then it presents method for analyzing seismic risk. A coupled analysis is presented, illustrated by an application to embankments and their foundation in gravelly alluviums. To conclude, liquefaction is the main cause of embankment failure and therefore requires tools dedicated to the evaluation of its risks of occurrence, but the other possible causes should not be forgotten in a global safety assessment.
