A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Research Methods for Public Outreach Initiatives
This article discusses one of the country's most progressive and comprehensive public outreach programs implemented by the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA). The success of SNWA's program is based on an understanding of public perception that was derived from qualitative and quantitative research. The article emphasizes the importance of conducting research before implementation and before the development of the outreach plan, which then serves as a compass, indicating to an organization where it stands, where it needs to go, and whom it needs to communicate with to get there. The post‐campaign research indicates whether the organization has reached its destination. Evaluating the effectiveness of key messages, focus groups, and techniques of doing research on a tight budget are discussed.
