Formal Architecture – Navigating The Architecture Labyrinth
A firm's formal architecture is comprises many interrelated elements that facilitate work. Each element can create inertia, but formal architecture is so interrelated that it is difficult to change one without changing them all. In this way, formal architecture is a major source of structural inertia. This chapter includes a number of the important elements of formal architecture individually. The chapter begins with the organization chart, which maps out the formal hierarchy that is an efficient way of organizing work. It also looks at why formal architecture suffers from inertia and describes value creation. Besides that the chapter suggests various ways to overcome inertia.
