Control of lead, copper, and iron pipe corrosion in Boston
The water supplied to the Boston metropolitan area is relatively corrosive to piping materials. Contamination of drinking water by lead is a concern because lead pipe that was used extensively in Boston in the late 1800s and the early 1900s was durable enough to be in service in the late 1970s. This paper describes a program established to monitor and control corrosion of lead pipe. The results of the program show that pH adjustment with sodium hydroxide has been effective in reducing both lead and copper corrosion and that a systematic monitoring program is essential in evaluating any proposed corrosion control scheme.
