Squares and Streets
The design of the unbuilt spaces appears as a preliminary and essential preoccupation of urban planning. This chapter presents the types of unbuilt spaces, essentially squares and streets, which give rise to classical urban planning configurations, in order to identify their commonalities or specificities. This analysis is obviously linked to the function of these surfaces, generally public, which must itself be studied by taking into account their shape, direction and location within urban spaces and the importance of the buildings they serve or enhance. Like streets, squares are undeveloped public spaces whose size and shape stand out from the surrounding buildings. Depending on their shape, their location in the city and their position in the plan, streets and squares respond to local functions that contribute to the general organization of urban activities, mobilities and events.
