Heritage in the “Asian Century”
Responding to Geopolitical Change
The world is witnessing a geopolitical shift towards Asia so profound that the twenty‐first century has been tagged the “Asian century.” This global shift may be reflected in the cultural heritage field, meaning that heritage practitioners, especially in the West, need to know more about Asia's heritage places and conservation approaches and aspirations. Asia has, however, already had a significant impact on heritage practice across the world. Indeed, the Asian century in the heritage field began in the 1980s. In identifying ways in which Asia may influence the field in coming years, the sheer size and complexity of the Asian continent and the diversity of its communities need to be recognized, and representations of “Asian” heritage, thought, and practice must be carefully made. The simplistic East/West binary may not adequately serve heritage scholarship and practice, and greater attention should be paid to understanding the meta‐values that apply to humans everywhere.
