The Room Fire
Qualitative Analysis
There are two different types of qualitative observational assessments for room fire behavior. One is a “top‐down” assessment that involves rapid screening techniques to order the relative hazards of different room interior designs. The other is a “bottom‐up” analysis that examines scenario behavior for a specific ignition location. This chapter discusses both specific (“bottom‐up”) fire scenarios and general (“top‐down”) fire growth potential (FGP) classifications. Qualitative observational estimates can provide a first‐order, bottom‐up analysis to organize thinking and predict outcomes. Scenario outcome estimates assess all relevant factors within each realm to estimate whether enough conditions exist to cause transition into the next realm. The fire growth potential (FGP) describes the ease for room conditions to reach flashover (FO). Moderate‐sized rooms may have an initial fire growth by spread‐over until room dimensions and ventilation characteristics create FO conditions.
