The Retailing of Healthcare
Clinics in Retail Settings
The image that often comes to mind when people hear the phrase “retail clinics” is that of a convenient care clinic (CCC) located in a mass‐merchandise, drug, or grocery store. Early expansion in number of retail clinics occurred at a very fast pace for convenient care facilities, with visits quadrupling from 2007 to 2009. Key aspects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and major cultural, economic, and demographic trends have converged to make retail settings more available and desirable for healthcare organizations that need to expand or relocate clinic facilities. The rise of retail clinics occurred at the same time that healthcare organizations began applying the Lean Methodology to the design of outpatient facilities. The growth in the number of clinics located in retail settings reflects increased consumer demand for convenient and affordable healthcare services.
