Church Architecture Worldwide since 1800
Since 1800, church architecture around the world has developed from structures reflecting the Classical or Gothic architectural traditions to include those reflecting a variety of local traditions as well as Modernist aesthetics. The space of Christian worship has been reshaped by three rival movements the Gothic revival with its promotion of altar‐centered churches for Anglicans and other Protestants, evangelicalism with its embrace of the auditorium church and its focus on performance by worship leaders and community among the congregation, and the liturgical movement with its focus on the participation of the people in the eucharist and other acts of worship. The contextualization of Christian church architecture is often difficult as styles and forms borrowed from local cultures are sometimes experienced as foreign by some groups in the area. Yet, it remains important given the diverse understandings of space among the world's cultures.
