Foreign Object Damage in Ceramic Matrix Composites
The responses of foreign object damage (FOD) in various ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) were presented. Impact damage, generated in CMC targets by ballistic impact using 1.59‐mm‐diameter steel ball projectiles, was characterized via residual strength and impact morphology as a function of variables of material, target support, temperature, preload, and environments (CMAS and salt). The current CMC materials did exhibit substantial vulnerability to FOD at an impact velocity of around Mach 1. However, they did possess enhanced resistance to FOD particularly at higher impact energies when compared to gas‐turbine silicon nitride counterparts. FOD and its analysis are intricate primarily due to CMCs' complexity in both architectures and material constituents. Systematic and multidisciplinary approaches are needed to better understand FOD phenomena and thus to design and fabricate robust and reliable CMCs for aeroengine applications.
