A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
West Nile virus (WNV) infection has attracted the attention of public health departments and related organizations in America since the WNV first appeared in New York in 1999. This chapter illustrates the applications of remote sensing and geographic information system techniques for examining and modeling the spread of WNV in urban contexts. The first study, by a case study of the City of Chicago, aimed to improve the understanding of how landscape, land surface temperatures, and socioeconomic conditions interacted to influence the spread of WNV in the urban context. This case study is a short version of the article by Liu and Weng. The second study investigated the WNV spread in the epidemiological weeks of 18–26, 27–35, and 36–44 in the years of 2007–2009 in the Southern California and mapped the risk areas. The inclusion shows part of a detailed study by Liu and Weng in the same study area.
