Design of Wool‐Geopolymer Pots
This study aims at designing sustainable wool‐geopolymer pots for greenhouse plant growing, exploiting nutrients obtained from the partial break‐down of raw wool fiber structure, which the alkaline environment of the geopolymer should trigger. The formulation of the geopolymeric matrix was designed to accomplish workability of the composite mixture, good alkaline driven matrix–wool interaction together with a good degree of polymerization. The designed ceramic‐based pot could thus ensure an optimal stability and durability, allowing its use as a long‐lasting container for plants. On the other hand, the hygroscopic properties of the wool should allow to significantly reduce the weekly amount of water needed to water the plants. This preliminary study demonstrates that adding value to wool wastes, as a safer, more sustainable and useful alternative to landfilling is possible. A wool‐geopolymer composite was successfully designed and used to cast durable, environmentally friendly and well‐performing pot plants, to be used as an alternative to the traditional peat ones.
