Windows and Skylights
The most important aspects of the window are the frame and the sash. The purpose of windows and skylights is to allow transmission of light while limiting the passage of moisture and air and, in some cases, to allow egress in case of emergencies. Light transmission is probably the most noticeable aspect of a window or skylight and is generally the purpose for installing the unit. Head and jamb components are essentially the basic framework for a given window or skylight and typically become the host or primary object. Muntins (or grilles) are partitions that divide, or simulate the division of, window glass. They can be surface mounted or located between glass panes and are available in various shapes and configurations. The frame and sash materials are essential in determining what a window will look like in two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional views. The glass drives the ability to perform energy and daylight studies.
