Scope of Water Harvesting for Groundwater Management Strategies
Groundwater management (GWM) involves actions that achieve water security extending beyond improving water quality and managing quantity. In GWM, attempts are made to integrate the water cycle, water supply, sanitation, flood water management, and waste management into both the development process and management of the river basin in order to equitably maximize water's many environmental, economic and social benefits; establish and promote water harvesting and conservation programs; build capacity of personnel and institutions in GWM. Analyses suggest that the concept of GWM for addressing water scarcity using rainwater harvesting (RWH) is changing slowly from an emphasis on technological and scientific solutions towards solutions that incorporate cultural and behavioral change, because technology solutions are no longer sufficient to deal with the numerous uncertainties and problems of increasing demand on water resources.
