Enhancing the Performance of Ultrafiltration (UF) Membranes with the Aid of Functional Coatings
Conventional ultrafiltration (UF)‐based membrane separation processes face significant challenges due to membrane fouling, resulting in permeate flux decline, reduced throughput, and increased operational costs and energy consumption. Recently, UF membranes with tailored surface properties have been fabricated to mitigate the shortcomings of the membrane processes and enhance their separation efficiencies. Several techniques, like additive blending, plasma and UV‐induced grafting, adsorbed coating, and chemical and plasma‐induced coating, are employed for surface modification of these membranes. Chemical‐, radiation‐, and plasma‐based coating techniques improve the coating durability and arrest the leaching of coating material. In the present chapter, we explore different avenues of functional coatings of UF membranes in terms of the necessity of functional coatings of membranes, the different coating techniques employed, and the improvement of performance characteristics of coated membranes used in various applications.
