A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Thermal insulation materials are designed to impede heat transfer, which is mainly realized by three mechanisms, including conduction, convection, and radiation. Polymer foams utilize a unique cellular structure to simultaneously obstruct thermal conduction and convection processes, and infrared radiation can be tuned by mixing the polymer matrix with a nanofiller. Thus, polymer foams offer excellent thermal insulation properties. In this chapter, the thermal insulation mechanism of polymer foams, the structural design, influential factors, and the methods of fabricating advanced thermal insulation foams will be covered.
